Full Throttle Toy Run

Dec 3rd: The early morning started off with a fine misty fog, but by the time the first bikes pulled in to register, the mercury read 48 degrees and we soon were welcoming an outpour of support from over 225 riders and drivers. We gathered at Selden F.D. for registration and the staging of the run. Free bagels (All Bagels Inc.), donuts (Glenn Wayne Bakery) and hot beverages from Eddie Locastro’s Coffee Truck (Selden Fire Commissioner) were plentiful. The WBAB street team cranked out the music, while Miss FT, Adriana Amaya sold 50/50’s, and raffle tickets for a very cool bicycle donated by Suffolk Pro Cycles. Dana and I were flooded with riders looking to purchase event shirts and register for the ride. The toy boxes were once again filling up fast…so fast that we decided to pull open the FTM van’s back doors and let folks load the toys directly inside. As the time drew near for kickstands to go up, Fingers took to the mic to give all a briefing of our route and riding points to ensure a safe arrival to SBCH.  Santa (Vinny Ammirati), boarded his musical sled along with Miss FT, Wonder Woman (Melisa Vlasaty) and Superman (Sean Ceasar), and as we prepared to embark on our mission to deliver the toys to the anxiously awaiting children at SBCH, holiday songs filled the air. Selden F.D. trucks and the Centereach fire police escorted the run with Fingers and G-Man directly behind leading the pack of motorcycles. Setauket and other local F.D.’s assisted with setting up the bucket truck, so that once we arrived at our destination, Santa and Miss FT could be raised as close as possible to the outside windows of the pediatrics floor of the hospital.

The centipede of fire trucks, Santa’s sled and motorcycles traveling the roads to SBCH was such a site to see. Upon our arrival, we were privileged to have some of the children from the 11th floor welcome us inside the lobby. As we all gathered and carried the toys to place under the huge Christmas tree; hospital staff, their children, patients and their families, and even visitors who were there to visit sick loved ones cheered as we placed the toys under the tree. Every year this day touches us all in a way that could never be expressed verbally. At some point during this heartwarming experience, our super heroes, Miss FT and Santa make their way to the 11th floor to visit the pediatrics unit, their arms filled with toys and their hearts filled with love.

I would like to thank all the businesses who donate to our live and Chinese auction. The participating F.D.’s, the FTM toy run committee, FTM photographers, Fingers and WBAB,
