Peter Frampton – Raw

Peter Frampton RAW Acoustic Tour

Review/Live Photos by Momma Dukes

Peter Frampton returned to his native habitat, the road, for the intimate Raw Acoustic Tour, bringing a rich and storied catalogue of rock and roll hits, his longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy and his guitar-toting son Julian Frampton. Previously associated with the classic rock bands Humble Pie and The Herd, Frampton enjoyed breakout solo success with the live album Frampton Comes Alive!

I got to hear this Grammy Award winner perform at NYCB Theatre at Westbury in Westbury, NY on October 19th.  My anticipation and excitement to finally see Peter Frampton made me feel like a teenager again.  But as with all “fantasies” the reality set in and I became bored all too quickly, and my fantasy was gone forever. I love acoustic performances, and his vocals and guitar playing are still exceptional, but the premise of the show (feeling like you were in his home chilling) left me disappointed. Why?; because he told a lot of stories in between songs. Mind you they were GREAT stories, but way too long and I found myself almost falling asleep in my seat. He might want to get a few pointers from his son Julian, who opened the show for his father. His performance with his friend/co-writer Ben Sheridan on keyboards was lively, his stories were short, and having never heard his original music before, I was quite impressed with his talent, and am actually looking forward to hearing more of his music in the future.  Julian did come out and perform later on with his dad on two songs “Road to the Sun”(written by Julian and his dad)  and a Buddy Holly Cover of “Heartbeat”.

Peter Frampton’s distinctive guitar sound, thanks to that crazy talk box effect, and gravel-toned vocals have not dimmed over the years and while this may be a subtler acoustic performance, it’s a chance to see the rock and roll legend in close quarters! If you can handle long story telling better than I did, you will most certainly enjoy his concert, but if you can’t I highly recommend purchasing his “Acoustic Classics” album.  Information on his upcoming 2017 tours is available on his website: www.frampton.com
