It was a foggy, Sunday morning on Father’s Day, but that didn’t stop fathers, sons, families, and hundreds of cars, trucks, motorcycles and vendors from coming to the 1st Annual OBI Father’s Day Car Show! All proceeds from this event support, Long Island Needs a Drag Strip.

I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing the President of Long Island Needs a Drag Strip, professional drag race driver and owner, John Cozzali of Cozzali Racing. John tells me that this all started when Sonny Rawson, from NY Wheels and OBI Sunday Cars & Coffee, contacted him and wanted to help support this project to get a track on Long Island. John says, “We want to help educate future racers and the general public about having a great experience in a safe environment. With over 7 million residents on Long Island and over 4,000 certified Time Chassis going out of state, you can just imagine the revenue that could be made, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” John also tells me that economic impact is key. The projected strip would be multipurpose and run all year long. Congressman Lee Zeldin recently lent his support, and after LINADS July 15th meeting with some influential members of their legislative board, they are actively looking at a few different areas in Suffolk County.

I asked John where all the profits go from the events that are done. He says, “NO ONE makes a dime off the money that is raised by our committee. We are a 501c3 non for profit organization with a full board in place. All proceeds from t-shirts, stickers or anything else we sell, go back into making more money to help spread awareness, lawyer fees, and environmental studies to name a few.” John and I both agree that bringing a professional Drag Strip to Long Island would greatly cut down the number of tragedies from unlawful, reckless street racing and turn it into the sport it’s meant to be in a safe environment. It would also bring jobs and revenue to existing residents and businesses, while making Long Island a premiere racing destination. For more information go to www.lineedsadragstrip.org
