Laconia Bike Week

June 10th -17th 2017

Story & Photos by Bob Stegmaier

This was the 94th Anniversary for this motorcycle celebration, which was attended by many bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts. The week started off with really great weather and some rain on Friday; however, the final weekend was sunshine and blue skies. There were many good days to ride in this scenic upstate New Hampshire mountain area.
The Faro Italian Grille was serving up the best Italian food in the area. The owners, the Ray brothers, continued the long standing tradition of great listening and dancing music at the Laconia Road House tent with four bands, and a wet tee-shirt contest daily mc’d by Jack Schit (for real) and very funny! They had daily special shows this year by the Flaunt Girls, who put on terrific aerial acts, with amazingly tight athletic bodies hanging upside down 20 feet off of the ground. Plenty of bands played the beer tent along with some wild mud wrestling matches to watch.
The staff of the Patio Garden Restaurant (Party Central and the Market Place) under the leadership of Robert Ames, provided a good place to party with both front and back stages for a variety of entertainment to go along with the tasty food and let’s not forget the large variety of ice cream flavors available.
The Rally Headquarters had a map of where visitors came from to attend the rally. It showed attendees from almost all of the 50 states, Canada and even Europe! They hosted several AMA Gypsy Tours; Monday – the Mae West Memorial Ride for Pets; Tuesday – a 70+ miles Gypsy Tour; Wednesday – 170 + mile guided covered bridges ride; Thursday – Laconia Mayor, Ed Engler, led a 2 hour ride through the Monadnock Region, and the motorcycle only Ride to the Sky up Mt. Washington was offered on Monday and Thursday. The Monday night birthday cake boat cruise on the M/S Mt. Washington was enjoyed by many bikers and was a good way to continue partying. Progressive Insurance sponsored an exciting 94th anniversary fireworks display on a clear Wednesday night. The Weirs Shuttle Train to/from Meredith and Lakeport provided a scenic relaxing ride. Progressive Insurance also had a great barber shop / hair salon and manicure set up near the boardwalk area train station on Lakeside Avenue. The Historic Train Station had an interesting custom bike show hosted by Burrito Me and gave out very nice trophies sponsored by the Haymond Law Firm.
Cynthia Makris (GM) of the NASWA Resort sponsored the Saturday ride to the NHMS, where riders had the fun opportunity to ride on the race track. The Peter Makris Memorial Ride benefits the Laconia Fire Department, NH Vets groups, Easter Seals and more. This year they raised $42,000. On Thursday the hotel dock provided the ideal backdrop for the annual Miss Laconia bikini contest sponsored by Budweiser and Automotive Specialties and hosted by Jody Perewitz – who is the fastest woman on an American V-twin motorcycle – over 200 MPH. Ms. Marissa Quinonez from Hillsboro, NH won the first place $1,200.00 prize.
The AMA sanctioned Wednesday Hill Climb event was welcomed back to the Gunstock Mountain Resort 70 meter ski jump hill by the thousands of attendees, who enjoyed a beautiful sunny day of racing up the mountain on 2 wheels, 4 wheels and sleds.
New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) in Louden, NH just south of the Weirs Beach area had a whole parking lot full of vendors, displays and several manufactures had demo rides available. Also at the NHMS was the 89th Annual Loudon Road Race Series – LRRS – on Sat the 17th & Sun the 18th. The classic winner was Shane Narbonne. The USCRA had races on Sat 10th & Sun 11th with many Vintage and Classic races. The Super Vintage class side car race was won by Joyce/Collins on a 750 BMW, and the classic side car race was won by Bailey/Cennamo on a 450 Honda classic.
