IMRG Run Red Cross

Indian Motorcycle Riders Group of Mineola’s Run for the Red Cross of L.I.

On Saturday, August 26th, 2017, the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group of Mineola (IMRG) held their first event – Run for the Red Cross of Long Island, raising $1,700 for their Disaster Relief Fund. The event started at the American Red Cross (ARC) offices on Willis Avenue in Mineola and ended at the Indian Motorcycle Dealership, MineolaMoto, on Jericho Turnpike where everyone enjoyed food, raffles, a 50/50 and the music of The Jeff Regan Band.Locally, the ARC of Long Island helps those affected by disasters by giving them money which can be used for food, clothing and a hotel room for a few days. They also help by replacing medications, medical equipment and items such as eyeglasses and hearing aids. The most common disaster the ARC responds to are home fires. Volunteers are on call 24/7 to help their neighbors. The ARC also grows to meet the size and scope of the disasters, such as Superstorm Sandy (10/2012) and Hurricane Harvey (8/2017), pulling in resources, employees and volunteers when and where needed.  My stepdaughter, Elizabeth Barker, a Senior Disaster Program Manager with the ARC of Long Island, left the event right after kickstands went up, and headed for Texas to support the Hurricane Harvey response.  Although she is an employee of the ARC, she volunteered to go to Texas for 2 weeks, during which time she worked at 4 shelters, including a 3,500 person shelter in the Convention Center.

Congratulations to the Bikers of Brooklyn RC for winning the Best Represented Club Trophy and to their member Frank Proto for winning the 50/50! A huge thank you to all the ARC volunteers for quickly learning the process of an event registration and handling every aspect of it flawlessly; and to Sgt. Robert Johnston, NCPD 3rd Precinct, for setting us up with the NCPD Police Officers of Mineola and those of the surrounding towns who blocked traffic so well during the ride that a rider told me afterward, “It was the “BEST ride ever, and I mean ever!”

Last, but not least, thank you to Skidd and Cappy of The Punishers LEMC for entertaining us all by modeling the Calvin Klein handbags, wraps, and scarves that they won in the raffles. It was the highlight of the day!

Great job IMRG members on your first event!
