BoA Little Gas Station Trivia

Today the demand for gasoline is so high that filling station owners sit behind a glass window all day, talk on their cell phones and sell lottery tickets while the customer does all the work. As a matter of fact many filling stations have become mini-marts and selling gas has almost become an afterthought.

But it wasn’t always that way, in 1913 to the satisfaction of many a motorist the first drive-in gas station was opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on its first day, the station sold 30 gallons of gasoline at 27 cents per gallon. This was also the first architect-designed station and the first to distribute free road maps. Up until that time gasoline was purchased at hardware stores, general stores and even drug stores.
According to the 2012 census the USA has 123,487 gas stations, followed by China with approximately 98,500. Countries like England and Germany have under 15,000 stations.
In the past, filling stations in the United States offered a choice between full service and self-service. Until the 1970s, full service was the norm, and self-service was rare.
My grandfather owned an ESSO Station in the Bronx near Van Courtland Park for 45 years from 1933 to 1978. I had the amazing opportunity to work with him when I was a kid. The station was on Jerome Avenue under the subway elevation, now that area is a parking lot. My grandfather’s station was a true full service station, every car that pulled it for gas got its oil and water checked, its windows cleaned and a promotional ESSO gift. Those were the glory days filing stations and im glad to have experienced it firsthand.
