Narrow Roads April 2016

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadI hope that you will excuse me, but I don’t have a ‘spiritual’ article for you this month. I’m not feeling particularly spiritual right now. In fact, I’m feeling pretty down from a combination of Long Island Winter and a country that has become ideologically black and white or red and blue if you prefer. For some reason, reason and compromise has gone out the window and ideological purity is everything. But I digress. What’s pushed me over the edge this week is an article that I recently read about a middle aged Florida woman and her 6’ pet alligator named Rambo. Rambo was the only survivor of 5 alligators adopted by Mary Thorn of Lakeland Florida, as part of an animal rescue. Miss Thorn, who studied Animal Science/Behavior at Poke College, has legally owned her pet alligator for 11 years. (Continue Reading)

Family vs. Corporation

0

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadBack in 2005, the CEO of a very large conglomerate, was indicted for stealing tens of millions of dollars from that corporation. At the time, I took special interest in the case because I had personally invested in that corporation. I had invested because it was a solid growing corporation which showed promise of significant future growth. (Continue Reading)

Riddles

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadRiddles have always intrigued me. Lewis Caroll’s “How is a raven like a writing desk?” is one of my favorites. This month, I would like to pose a riddle to you. How are red light cameras like the Ten Commandments?
There are few things Long Islanders can agree to hate more than red light cameras. Those annoying one flash bandits, that in a blink of an eye rob us of our hard earned cash. And adding insult to injury they provide us with a picture of our car, our license plate and a mug shot just in case we thought we could argue our innocence. (Continue Reading)

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadThirty years ago, I quit my job at Fairchild Republic and began to work with my dad, who had only months earlier started a marine construction company. I had learned at Fairchild that sitting behind a desk was not for me. I needed to be out and about, working with my hands. Working on the water was even better, but just two years later, my dad was gone and I was on my own. (Continue Reading)

SS Meredith

The SS Meredith Victory Christmas Miracle.

As the adage goes; “to the victor goes the spoils” and so it was with regard to the United States and the USSR. Following the surrender of Japan, in August of 1945, the Korean Peninsula which had previously been under the control of Imperial Japan, was divided in two along the 38th parallel. The north was held by the Soviets and the south by the United States. By the end of the decade, two new nations had formed, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the north and the Republic of Korea in the south. (Continue Reading)

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadMany years ago, I read of a military officer who told his troops, “You don’t have to worry about earning my respect. You already have my respect. All you need to do is keep it.” I think that officer was a very wise man. Although we very often speak of ‘earning the respect’ of others, he understood a basic principle that governs all civilized societies; man is inherently deserving of respect from his fellow man. Psalm 51:17

A number of years ago, when I began attending biker events, I was taught by a friend how to show proper respect when meeting bikers. I was taught that it was good form to remove your sunglasses when being introduced, as a show of good faith. (ie. You’re not hiding your eyes from the other person.) I was told that it was important to remove the glove on your right hand before reaching out to shake someone’s hand. (Continue Reading)

Seek God in Everything

0

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadWe know that “God works all things together for our good.” I’ve heard that bible quote from believers and non-believers alike. But in the face of illness, relationships in crises, abuse, economic uncertainty and even death, how do I come to terms with it? How do I explain its truth? I can’t, because that isn’t what God’s word says. Romans 8:28 says: “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” (Continue Reading)

The Fourth Bullet

0

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadThe date was March 30th 1981.  John Hinkley Jr., the love struck stalker of actress Jodi Foster, had finally found a way to capture Foster’s attention.  He would assassinate the President of the United States.

On that fateful morning, Hinkley waited for President Reagan to finish a speaking engagement before the AFL CIO.  As Reagan left the building and proceeded to his waiting limo, Hinkley emerged from a crowd of admiring onlookers, firing a 22 cal. revolver with exploding long rifle shells.  He unloaded six rounds in approx. three seconds, striking four people including the President.   (Continue Reading)

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadLast month, I shared with you some thoughts on the goodness of God and the importance of coming to trust Him in both good times and bad.  I had also mentioned that my mother had suddenly become bedridden.  Despite this very bad news and the subsequent disruption to our lives as we now care for our mother 24-7, my faith in the goodness of the God I serve has not wavered.  In fact it has only grown stronger over the past month.  Allow me to tell you why. Be Prepared Through Constant Practice

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadTrue story:  When he got the call, he rushed home as quickly as he could.  His 2 year old had been found at the bottom of the swimming pool.  How it happened and who was at fault is irrelevant.  By God’s grace the child was found quickly and the paramedics were able to resuscitate the boy thereby saving his life.  He was transported to the hospital and the prognosis was that he would make a full recovery.  The father praised God for His goodness in sparing his son’s life.  (Continue Reading)

Justice, Mercy and Grace

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadA young boy was once told by his dad, never to drive his go cart up a steep hill on the side of their house.  But one day while his dad was at work, the boy got to thinking how much fun it would be to ride the go cart in the back yard.  He tried to push the cart up the hill but he wasn’t strong enough.  So, despite having been told not to attempt driving up the hill, the boy decided to do it anyway.  He started at one end of the driveway and built up speed, expecting to easily climb the hill.  But the cart stalled half way up the hill and began to roll backwards towards the driveway.  The boy lost control and rolled into his dad’s bike, creasing the exhaust pipes.  When the father came home he immediately spotted the damage to his bike.  He also quickly determined that the young boy had tried to drive up the hill with the cart and had caused the damage to the bike. Societal Disorder

Bob_Anton_Narrow_Road“A 13-year-old boy has been found guilty of murdering a woman from West Midlands.  The body of Glynis Bensley, 47, was found in Cheshire Street, Smethwick just before midnight on 3 September.  A second defendant, Zoheb Majib, 20, of Cheshire Road, Smethwick, was cleared of murder, but found guilty of manslaughter.  Both defendants were also found guilty of robbery. They will be sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 17 April.  A post-mortem examination found Mrs. Bensley died of a head injury.  Police said she was hit by the 13-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age.  After he had robbed her, the youth stomped on her face with such force that his footprint was left on her cheek, a spokesman said.” BBC News (Continue Reading)

Under and Alone

0

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadIf you’re looking for an interesting book to read during this miserable winter, I recommend the book Under and Alone: The True Story of the Undercover Agent Who Infiltrated America’s Most Violent Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, Random House, 2005 .  Once I started reading this book I couldn’t put it down.  As the title aptly describes, this is the story of an ATF agent who successfully infiltrates a very hardcore motorcycle club in order to build a case against their criminal activity.  The story itself is captivating, but it is one of the undercurrents in the story that I found truly thought provoking.   (Continue Reading)

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day and the topic of religion came up.  I know, it’s one of the two things you’re not supposed to talk about if you want to keep your friends, but I can’t pass up a question on the subject.  My friend, who would describe himself as a believer in God, has run afoul of his Church because he failed to follow certain religious practices.  A Church leader has warned him that he has offended God by not regularly attending Church.  He wanted my opinion on the subject.  I warned him, that my answer might surprise him.  You see, I believe that the bible teaches that even if we attend Church every day and observe all religious practices flawlessly, that does not guarantee a right standing before God.  I told him that it all boils down to one simple word; relationship.  (Continue Reading)

Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadOver the past 35 years, I have had opportunity and privilege to serve in leadership capacities in various organizations.  Some positions of leadership, I desired and sought after.  Others I was encouraged to take by people who claimed confidence in my ability to lead.  In every, case bar none, I found one thing to be true; organizations, no matter how well run, no matter what the cause, goal or agenda, are full of back seat drivers.  And those drivers can be counted upon to do two things.  1) They will pressure you to carry out their private agendas.  2)  They will hide like cockroaches in a well lit room when it comes time for someone else to take the reigns of leadership. Have you ever been invited to go to church by a Christian friend?  Did you beg out?  Did you think to yourself; ‘those church services are too long, incredibly boring and nothing ever happens so what’s the point?  Well, what if the sermon was only about three minutes long?  And what if the Preacher really laid into the congregation about their lack of faith?  And what if the congregation formed a lynch party and tried to kill the Preacher?  Do you think you might be interested in going to a church service like that?  If so, then have I got the ultimate church service for you.  (Continue Reading)

“As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.” Luke 12:58

In 1979 a 21 year old Sheriff’s Deputy by the name of Kenny Cassell, from a small town in Arkansas, made a foolish mistake.  In that year, the young man stole chickens off a truck.  It probably didn’t seem like such a big deal at the time.  In fact, the Hens were worth only $100.00.  He may have thought that no one would ever find out.  But someone did.  Cassell was arrested and charged with theft of interstate shipments by carrier, a felony crime. The trial which certainly should have ended his career, ended instead in a mistrial.  He eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, was fined $300.00 and served 30 days in a local jail. : beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior

In light of some of the horrific stories that have come out of the Middle East of late, I’ve been giving some deeper thought to what’s right and what’s wrong.  The recent tragic murder of reporter James Foley by Islamic extremists being a case in point.  Many Western world leaders have weighed in on the murder of Foley branding it a despicable and cowardly act, but what about the moral compass of other societies? Bob_Anton_Narrow_RoadDo you remember the name Kitty Genovese?

Miss Genovese was a 28 year old bar manager who was attacked and killed while returning to her home in Kew Gardens in the early morning hours.  Her attacker, Winston Moseley struck first when Miss Genovese was just 100 feet or so from the safety of her apartment.  He stabbed her twice in the back as she was walking home.  Her screams alerted neighbors, one of whom yelled at the attacker from a 7th floor tenement window across the street.  Moseley, in fear of being discovered, broke off the attack and retreated as Genovese struggled to her feet and continued toward the safety of her apartment.  However, seeing that no one was coming to her aid, the attacker returned, catching up with Genovese in her apartment vestibule and finishing the horror which he had begun.  Kitty Genovese died that day of multiple stab wounds.   (Continue Reading)
