The 1929 Harley JDH Racer
PART 3 of 3

During the last two months I have been telling you about the amazing vintage motorcycle that I witnessed during the BONHAM VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE AUCTION at the Bally’s Casino in Las Vegas. We talked about Steve Mc Queen’s Triumph Desert Sled, A 1929 Crocker and an amazing 1951 “one of a kind” red Vincent that sold at auction for an amazing $435.000.00.
For this last installment of “The Holy Grail” I would like to tell you about the 1929 Harley-Davidson JDH Racer. When I first saw this motorcycle on the auction block up close and personal, I was immediately struck by its simplistic beauty and historic value. This era Harley is like the missing link between old and new styling. (Continue Reading)

BoI HAVE BEEN IN THE PRESENCE OF“THE HOLY GRAIL”

In one day I have seen more vintage motorcycles than I have seen in my entire life. It happened in Vegas this past New Year’s. I spend early January riding with my brother-in-law, David, in the Nevada desert after an epic New Year’s Eve party at Danny Koker’s bar “Vamp’d.” (Continue Reading)

BoA Little Gas Station Trivia

Today the demand for gasoline is so high that filling station owners sit behind a glass window all day, talk on their cell phones and sell lottery tickets while the customer does all the work. As a matter of fact many filling stations have become mini-marts and selling gas has almost become an afterthought. (Continue Reading)

BoVINTAGE RESPECT

The next time you are out riding and there is a large group of motorcycles, notice which one’s get the most attention and have the most amount people gathered around them.  It won’t be the newest fat tire chopper, it won’t be the new Victory, and it might not even be the new 2015 Roadglide. Not that there is anything wrong with these bikes and I’m sure their owners love them, but most likely the crowd will be standing around the older bikes. (Continue Reading)

I RODE “650 THOUSAND” MILES

And still going strong

Her name is Gloria+1,Gloria Tramontin Struck  and she has ridden enough miles to circle the circumference of the earth 26 1/2 times. At age 89, she hasn’t slowed down. In fact, she’s still picking up speed on her Heritage Softail.

Gloria has a great history that as riders we would all be proud and envious of, her brother taught her to ride in 1936 when she was only 10 years old.

In 1946, she joined the Motor Maids and has since enjoyed the camaraderie of other women who share her love for riding. She says there are more female riders than ever today and that motorcycle manufacturers are designing bikes better suited for women, with closer handlebars, for example.

Struck has had some close calls on the road, pointing to a scar above her left eye, but says she was never at fault and always got right back on the bike. She credits motorcycling with keeping her alert as she grows older. (Continue Reading)

Lane Splitting Maniac

0

BoIt is and will always be a controversial topic. Many riders know “Lane splitting” may save riders a lot of time, it can be considerably safer than sitting in traffic and acting like a car, as long as it’s done within certain guidelines.

It’s time for certain drivers to get these thoughts out of their heads: “lane splitting is jumping ahead,” “motorcyclists should have to wait in line like the rest of us,” “riding in between cars is suicidal.” While it’s illegal in most of the United States, it’s accepted in many other parts of the world, and evidence is mounting that lane splitting is safer for riders than sitting in traffic, and actually benefits car drivers as well as the riders themselves. “ROAD GLIDE” Rides Again in 2015

Bo-Fact_Trvia

Harley used the year it was out of production to put Project Rushmore on the revised Road Glide. This includes outfitting it with the High Output version of the Twin Cam 103, the updated engine receiving new cams and a high-flow airbox. Harley claims the High Output treatment bumps the 100 lb-ft of torque generated by the 2013 Road Glide Custom with the standard TC103 up to 104.7 lb-ft at the same 3250 rpm. The 2015 Road Glide Special equipped with Harley’s Reflex Linked Brakes and ABS that launched on the 2014 touring models. Just like last year’s Street Glide, the front end received a stockier 49mm fork with larger sealed steering bearings to go along with stiffer triple clamps. (Continue Reading)

Anything that can Go Wrong, will Go Wrong

Let’s start with running out of gas. You might be thinking well it’s up to the rider to make sure that he has enough gas for the days Bo-Fact_Trviaride ahead right, you would thinks so. Well a few years back I was riding with a buddy let’s just call him Spider for the story. Spider just bought a new Softail with that newfangled fuel injection “no reserve gas valve.”  It was a perfect summer day and we rode all day without a hitch until we had to stop at the Wantagh parkway draw bridge, while sitting in traffic in an incline with cars building up behind us and Spider in my lane next to me on my left side he runs out of gas. Turns out that it’s not his fault as his gas gauge needle was stuck somewhere around half a tank, but here’s where the Murphy’s Law kicks in.  Anywhere else he would have ran out of gas that day he would have just pulled off to the side of the road. Now we have a bike out of gas, no reserve, draw bridge up, on an incline, traffic behind us, muddy road shoulders from the rain the night before, and of course no easy access to a gas station, MURPHYS LAW!
