American Legion Riders

Story and Photos by Tami Ellinport

It turned out to be a beautiful day, mid-April, for the Elmont American Legion Post 1033 to have their Annual Blessing of the Bikes  Eight years ago, Sal Martella, who is a member of the Post and member of the American Legion Riders started this event. There were at least 20 volunteers from the Legion to make this event happen. Burgers and hot dogs were on the grill all afternoon along with potato and macaroni salad. A little liquid is always good when at a Que so beer and soda was included with the entry donation. DJ Frank Neal kept the music going all afternoon which I have to say was to my liking. Donation raffle prizes from local merchants warranted a few extra arms lengths of tickets to be sold. Martino’s Restaurant, King Umberto’s, HD of Bellmore, HD of Miracle Mile, Rolling Thunder Cycles, and the Ladies Auxiliary were just a few of the many donated raffle prizes. Before everyone filled their bellies, Deacon Bruce Burnham said a prayer and blessed the 110 motorcycles, that filled the street in front of the Legion. In all there were 150 attendees, one of the biggest turn-out for this event. The winner of the 50/50 was generous enough to donate the money back which along with the raffle prize money will go to: Homeless Veterans, The Veterans Stand Down, Building Homes for Hero’s and Rock out Cures.
