Raising funds and awareness for Autism

Story & photos by Cowboy

On Saturday, May 6th Chosen Souls M.C. and 1Journey2Wheels (a not-for-profit 501(c) 3), hosted a motorcycle run to benefit autism. More than 100 riders from all around Long Island, and a few visiting Chosen Souls M.C. members from Michigan, gathered at the Chosen Souls M.C. clubhouse to show support for and help raise funds to benefit autism. Everyone enjoyed bagels and coffee offered up. Many bought raffle tickets in hopes to win one of the incredible prizes in the Chinese auction and live auction. Prizes included GoPros, sports memorabilia and amazing vacation packages. Classic rock tunes was provided by the WBAB Street Team. Around noon the call was given for the riders to mount up for a little scoot before returning to the clubhouse for the after ride party, which included classic sounds of The Diesel Band and a lot of tasty food.

Joe Inzerillo, a member of the Chosen Souls M.C. and parent to an autistic child, let me know a little more about autism: “Autism is a devastating diagnosis for families. Many children with autism can’t communicate and often have difficulty expressing themselves. They have trouble understanding what others are saying and feeling. This developmental disability effects 1 in 45 children in the U.S. Parents usually notice signs in the first 2 years of their child’s life.”

This year’s event raised more than $25,000, which benefitted many local groups including: Nassau-Suffolk Autism Society of America, Special Needs Autism Program, AHRC/Spectrum Design/Camp, Loyal Town Family Center for Autism, Development Disabilities Institute, Quality Services for the Autism Community and others. So many lives are impacted by autism, but with groups and caring people working together, we can and will make a difference in the autism communities. My gratitude to the members of Chosen Souls M.C. and 1Journey2Wheels, and to all who came out to show their support. Special thanks to Joe Inzerillo, for his help in putting this event together and for the information in this story.
